Victimization & Police Violence

I read these statistics in a CBC article a couple years back, and I've thought about it since.⠀

These statistics are shocking and yet all to familiar to us all. Considering police "warrior mentality" about how it is them up against the world/stereotypes that mentally ill people (especially racialized people with mental illness) are dangerous and unpredictable: these statistics reflect the intersection of all of the factors people who are mentally ill are facing in neoliberal capitalist society. ⠀

Since these statistics and this story is from 2018, these numbers have undoubtably changed, though I'm quite certain that the trend would have become more dire since 2018, as critical criminologists have hypothesized.
As stated, you'll likely notice that more and more police are talking about "crisis response teams" in which the police are accompanied by a mental health worker or a social worker (as we know those professions have their own histories of oppressing mentally ill and racialized people). The fact that these people are showing up to a crisis situation with an armed cop, means there is always the risk of police violence against the persons seeking assistance. Check out the article in my link in bio, if you'd like to read the original CBC article on the matter. ⠀
