2021 Canadian Federal Party Promises on Disability & Mental Health: A (very) short guide on each Party's platforms

Hi friends! I've put together a short summary guide on what the Canadian Federal Parties mentioned about mental health and disability in their most recent platforms that I could find. Please note that I outline the key points (there is more to read in the platforms). What are your thoughts on their platforms?! Voting is on September 20, 2021!

New Democratic Party

  • Uphold the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

  • Strengthen Accessibility Act to cover all federal agencies equally

  • Pharmacare plan

  • A national perinatal mental health strategy

  • Investments in non-police interventions

  • Extend sickness benefits from 15 to 50 weeks

  • Project to allow workers with episodic illnesses and disabilities to access I sickness benefits a day at a time as needed

  • Expand income security programs to ensure a guaranteed livable income.

  • Federal disability benefit

  • Hiring more disability adjudicators

Green Party of Canada

  • A new Guaranteed Livable Income (GLI) program would replace the current array of income supports, such as disability payments, social assistance and income supplements for seniors

  • The payment would be set at a "livable" level for different regions of the country

  • Unlike existing income support programs, additional income would not be clawed back


Liberal Party of Canada

  • Re-introduce a Disability Benefit Act; Canada Disability Benefit

  • Employment strategy for Canadians with disabilities

  • Proceed with the timely and ambitious implementation of the Accessible Canada Act

  • Assume a prominent role within the ‘’international disability inclusion community"

  • Canada Mental Health Transfer

  • Encourage employers to add mental health coverage

  • Pilot $150 million over three years in grants to nonprofits and charities delivering mental health and wellness programming

  • Revise substance abuse policy framework

  • Suicide prevention strategy that encourages people including legal firearms owners to seek help when they need it

  • Double the Disability Supplement in the Canada

  • Workers Benefit from $713 to $1,500

  • Enabling Accessibility Fund
